Checkout works for you but not for your customers. Here's how to find out why.

By The AskOjo team. Last updated: 6 November 2026.

Short answer. When checkout works on your phone and fails for a customer, the break is usually conditional. It hits one country, one phone or browser, one payment method, or shoppers who are signed in, and your own test doesn't use that path. Find the difference between their attempt and yours, then repeat their path step by step.

Why your own test passes

You test from your own country, on your own phone, with your own saved wallet and a cart you know. A customer arrives from somewhere else, on a different phone, paying a different way.

One owner wrote: "Checkouts work fine for me so I can’t replicate the error myself." (Shopify Community, Aug 2023). In the same post he estimated he had lost about $20,000 that month (his own figure). We found the same report in at least 4 separate threads among 52 we read about checkout problems.

Most owners hear about it late. In those threads, about 11 heard first from a customer, about 10 from a drop in sales, and about 4 from their own testing. About 14 of the 52 never found the cause.

Find the problem in six steps

1. Rule out a Shopify outage. Check Shopify's status page first. If it's a platform incident, there is nothing to fix on your side.

2. Get one failed attempt in detail. Ask the customer who wrote in for:

  • their country and postcode
  • their phone or computer, and browser (for example, Safari on iPhone)
  • how they tried to pay (card, Apple Pay, Shop Pay, PayPal)
  • whether they were signed in to an account on your store
  • the step where it stopped, and a screenshot
  • roughly when they tried

Never ask for card numbers or passwords.

3. Repeat their path, not yours. Use their country's address at checkout, their kind of phone and browser, their payment method, and the same products in the cart. Try once signed in and once as a guest. Shipping and taxes at checkout follow the address the shopper types, so a test from your own address can pass while theirs fails.

4. List what changed, by date. Theme updates, apps added or removed, and changes to markets, shipping or payments. Removing an app can break things too: 9 of 27 negative reviews of Shopify apps we read describe breakage after an uninstall, from code left behind.

5. Turn apps off one at a time. In the threads where one app was the cause, this is how owners found it. When the platform is the cause, it doesn't help, which is why step 1 comes first.

6. Check the usual suspects for the symptom.

What the customer seesWhere to look first
Tapping Check out goes back to the home page or reloads the cart, often on iPhone SafariCart and theme code; a recent theme update or cart app
The Pay button spins and nothing happensThe payment provider and the wallet buttons; try with the express buttons switched off
"No shipping options" for their addressShipping zones, rates and markets for that country (see our guide on international checkout)
Prices in their currency, then another currency at checkoutMarkets and payment settings for that country
Their card is declinedFraud and payment settings; 10% of shoppers who left a checkout cite a declined card (Baymard)

If you still can't reproduce it

Ask an affected customer for a short screen recording, and send it to Shopify support with the time and the steps. Or have someone shop your store from the customer's side: their country, their phone, their way of paying.

That last part is what AskOjo does. Paste your website and pick where your customers are. AI shoppers try to buy from it on phones and desktop and stop before paying. Within 48 hours you get the screens where they got stuck. The first check is free.

Why it's worth chasing

Of US shoppers who left a checkout and weren't just browsing, 17% say the site had errors or crashed (Baymard). In the threads we read, breaks that hit only some shoppers lasted from 2 to 4 days up to about 3 weeks before the owner found them.

Questions

Is it my customer's fault?

Sometimes: a typo in the address, or a bank declining the card. If several customers report the same step, it's the store.

Do I need a developer?

Often not. Where the threads named a cause, it was a setting or an add-on more often than code: market, shipping-zone or rate setup in about 6 threads, a checkout or theme setting in about 5, and a platform incident in about 6.

Shopify support says nothing is wrong. Now what?

That happens in the threads too. Bring them one failed attempt from step 2, with the screenshot and the time.
