How to test your store the way your customers shop it: 25 checks
Short answer. Place a test order, then repeat checkout from each country, phone and payment method your customers use. One test order checks one path: yours. Most checkout breaks hit only some shoppers, so run the checks below on an iPhone, an Android phone, a computer and inside Instagram, from each country you ship to.
Short on time? Start with checks 4, 11, 16, 17 and 20.
Before you start
Place a test order. Shopify lets you do this with test mode in Shopify Payments. It proves your own path works.
See your store from another country. If your store changes by location, a VPN shows you that country's prices and currency. Shipping and taxes at checkout follow the address you type, so use a real address format for that country too. Stop before paying unless you are in test mode.
Write down your promises. Every promise a shopper sees before checkout: free-shipping thresholds, "duties included", discount codes, delivery times, prices on banners and ads. These are what checkout has to match.
Finding the store
- Right country, right store. Open your store as a shopper in each country you sell to. Pass: prices, currency and language match that country, or a switch is easy to find, and nobody is pushed onto a store that can't sell to them.
- Shared links work. Open your own ad, influencer and social links. Pass: each opens the named product in the shopper's country, not a dead page, a sold-out page or the home page.
- In-app browsers load. Send a product link to yourself in an Instagram, Facebook or TikTok message and tap it inside the app. Pass: no white screen, and the buy button responds.
- The store is open. Pass: the home page isn't a password or maintenance page. Most uptime checks still say "OK" for a password page. One owner wrote: "Turned out my storefront had been password protected the whole time" (Shopify Community).
Product page
- Add to cart works on each phone. Pass: the item lands in the cart on iPhone, Android and desktop.
- Re-run after changes. Repeat check 5 after each theme update and each app install or uninstall. Of 27 negative reviews of Shopify apps we read, 9 describe breakage after an app was uninstalled.
- Price matches. Pass: the product-page price equals the cart and checkout price, in the shopper's currency.
- Product-page promises hold. Pass: delivery time, returns and "duties included" match checkout and your policy pages.
- Size guide says which system. Pass: there is a size guide and it says EU, UK or US. Of apparel sites Baymard reviewed, 83% on desktop and 87% on mobile didn't give enough sizing information (Baymard, 2022).
Cart
- The cart keeps its items. Add two items, then reload, sign in, sign out, and move from Instagram's browser to Safari. Pass: the items are still there each time.
- The cart reaches checkout. Pass: the checkout button in the cart or cart drawer opens checkout, not the home page or a blank page.
- Discounts carry over. Pass: an advertised code or automatic discount shows in the cart and still applies at checkout.
- The cart total is honest. Pass: the cart shows shipping and tax, or says plainly they're added at checkout, and doesn't contradict a banner.
Sign-in and account
- Account emails arrive. Pass: sign-up, login-code and password-reset emails reach a test inbox within a few minutes.
- Guest checkout exists. Pass: a shopper can pay without making an account. 18% of shoppers who left a checkout cite being forced to create one (Baymard).
Checkout (stop before paying)
- Checkout loads and moves on. On each phone and from each country, checkout loads, accepts an address and reaches the payment step. Pass: no error, no endless loading, no bounce to the home page. 17% of US shoppers who left a checkout, and weren't just browsing, say the site had errors or crashed (Baymard).
- Each ship-to country is offered. For each country you list as a ship-to country, checkout offers it, accepts a valid address and shows at least one shipping option.
- No surprise costs. Compare the last-step total with your promises and the product-page price. Pass: no shipping, tax, duty or insurance line appears that an earlier page said wouldn't, and the full total shows before payment.
- Same currency to the end. Pass: checkout charges in the currency the store showed, with the shopper's country's taxes, not yours.
- Payment buttons respond. Apple Pay, Shop Pay, Google Pay and PayPal appear where expected and open their payment sheet when tapped, on each phone. At least one method common in the shopper's country is offered.
- Payment inside Instagram. Inside Instagram's browser, note which wallets show. Pass: at least one usable way to pay is left.
- Optional fields stay optional. Pass: leaving "Address line 2" or "Company" empty doesn't block checkout on a phone.
After the order (on a test order only)
- The confirmation email arrives for each way of ordering.
- The tracking link works. Pass: the link in the shipping email opens a live tracking page.
- The duties wording matches. Pass: what your policy page says about duties matches what checkout says.
How long this takes
Four devices, each country you ship to, 25 checks. For a store shipping to three countries that's 300 steps, and it needs re-running after each theme, app or shipping change.
That grid is what AskOjo runs for you. Paste your website and pick where your customers are. AI shoppers try to buy from it on phones and desktop and stop before paying. Within 48 hours you get the screens where they got stuck. The first check is free.
